The smoothing of work piece surfaces is not only helpful for the removal of general surface irregularities, but it is also required for eliminating grinding grooves, scratches and for levelling the surface of castings and forgings.
Mass finishing can produce practically any surface finish, irrespective of whether the work pieces are made from aluminum, brass, carbon steel or stainless steel.
Since surface smoothing processes are more or less identical with deburring operations, they also have a deburring and edge radiusing effect.
The achievable surface finish depends to a large extent on the utilized machine type, the machine settings and the work piece material.
Equally important are the media: Fast grinding media generally produce a rougher surface finish than slow grinding media. The surface roughness can also be controlled by the media size and shape.
